Website speed and hosting: what the server can and cannot fix

By the Hosstec teamOctober 10, 20266 min read

Which parts of page speed depend on your host, such as server response time, PHP version and caching, and which depend on your site.

A slow site is often blamed on hosting. Sometimes that is right. Often the page itself is heavy. Knowing which side is at fault saves time.

What hosting controls

  • Time to first byte (TTFB): how long the server takes to start answering.
  • PHP and database versions, which affect dynamic sites a lot.
  • Disk type. SSD or NVMe storage reads faster than old spinning disks.
  • Server-side caching and compression.
  • Network distance between the server and your visitors.

What your site controls

  • Image size and format. Compress images and serve modern formats.
  • Number of scripts and third-party tags.
  • Plugins and themes that add queries on every page load.
  • Caching rules for static files.

A simple way to measure

Run a page-speed test three times at different hours. If TTFB is consistently high, even for a simple page, look at the server or the plan. If TTFB is fine but the page is slow to display, look at images and scripts.

Quick wins

  1. Update to a current PHP version supported by your software.
  2. Enable page caching.
  3. Put a CDN in front of static files if your audience is spread across regions.
  4. Remove plugins you do not use.

Good hosting gives a fast base. A lean site makes use of it.
